We are pleased to have acclaimed Baroque violinist and violist performance artist and radio broadcaster Kathleen Kajioka join us on Saga Connections. Kathleen’s mother Sigrún Torfadóttir met the young scientist Robert Kajioka while visiting Toronto in the 1960s. They married in Iceland, and eventually settled in Toronto to raise their family. Kathleen grew up in north Toronto and continues to make Toronto her home base.
Kathleen’s connection to her Icelandic roots remained strong over the years and she Still performs in Iceland and in the past has been concertmaster of the Reykavik Chamber Orchestra and guest conductor of the Skálholt Bach Consort. The Icelandic newspaper Morgunblaðið has claimed her as their ‘West Icelandic baroque violinist’ but many of you will know her as a familiar voice on Classical 96.3fm as host of “A Little Night Music” and Saturday night “Dinner Classics” as well as “Sunday Night at the TSO.”
She is part of the Early Music Chamber group, Ensemble Masques, whose recordings of 17th century German repertoire have received wide critical acclaim, including the Gramophone Award and the Diapason d’Or.
But imparting her love and knowledge of music as a teacher of historical performance at the Royal Conservatory of Music’s Glenn Gould School, and in speaking and engaging with local groups of all ages, is a special gift Kathleen has extended to Toronto communities. We are so lucky to have her on Saga Connections. She will speak to us about “The Heart of the Music”.
Join us on Saga Connections for a chance to meet and dialogue with an esteemed member of our Icelandic-Canadian community and, perhaps, to learn a little more about music or be inspired to take in a live concert as we joyfully move out of this pandemic.
