Nov 29 – Jan 13, Leifar/Remnants by Svava Thordis Juliusson at QueenSpecific
November 29, 2012 @ 8:00 pm - January 13, 2013 @ 8:00 pm
The activity of tying one cable tie to another, or conversely a plastic tie to nylon rope, until something familiar emerges is at the core ofSvava Thordis Juliusson’s installation, Leifar/Remnants, at *QueenSpecific. A connection to Juliusson’s country of birth figures strong in her work – titles often come to her in Icelandic, while the aesthetic considerations are drawn largely from the colour, shape and texture of the landscape. Conceptually, Juliusson aims to explore the ubiquitous nature of plastic, and how it manifests as a part of natural and domestic environments.
Svava Thordis Juliusson is a Hamilton, Ontario-based artist born in Siglufjordur, Iceland in 1966. Her art practice responds to current events, her immediate environment and personal experiences. She works primarily with plastic, various sizes and colours of cable ties, clothing tags, fencing and found plastic. And while her recent work has been executed with a more intuitive approach to material, a personal landscape and narrative continue to surface within the work.

*QueenSpecific is a window exhibition space displaying site-specific art installations. It is located on Queen Street West adjacent to and sponsored by Dufflet Pastries. Artists exhibiting in the space are asked to consider the dimensions of the window, the locale and the potential to engage with the casual passer-by.
This is the second in a series of *QueenSpecific exhibitions programmed by guest curators Stefan Hancherow and Jennifer Simaitis.
