Nordic Nights: Fallen Leaves (2023) by Aki Kaurismäki

November 26 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Our next Nordic Nights feature is the Finnish film Fallen Leaves (2023) by Aki Kaurismäki .

Synopsis

Fallen Leaves (Kuolleet lehdet) by arguably the most well-known Finnish director, Aki Kaurismäki, had its Canadian premiere at TIFF last year. It is a subtly woven tale about ordinary people looking for happiness. Alma Pöysti, seen at Nordic Nights in 2022 as the lead in TOVE, the Tove Jansson biopic, is Ansa, who meets up with Holappa, played by Jussi Vatanen and no, sparks don’t fly, but Kaurismäki magic happens. The title is a nod to a lovely melancholy French chanson Les Feuilles Meurtes (Autumn Leaves) and the soundtrack features, among others, Finnish band Maustetytöt who bring their own tinge of wistfulness to the story. As Kaurismäki himself has quipped: When all the hope is gone, there is no reason for pessimism.
